Profile Biography
I didn't receive environmental education until I interned with a non-profit solar energy group in San Antonio, Texas. I was 25 at the time, had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and had never been to college. The chairman of the non-profit was my first mentor and inspired me to go to school to pursue a degree in environmental science. I was very successful in my undergraduate studies, and was fortunate to receive an REU fellowship the summer before my senior year. From there I went to work as a subcontractor for the Environmental Protection Agency, and reviewed pesticide toxicity studies. I worked full time and also went to school for my Masters degree in environmental biology at the same time. Because I only took one official biology course in all my time as a student and wanted to pursue further graduate study, I decided it would be important to pursue a PhD in biology. I defended my dissertation and graduated from Baylor University with a Ph.D. in Biology in December 2018. Currently, I am an environmental scientist for the consulting company CDM Smith, Inc. I train and compete as a Strongman athlete in my free time. My family and friends mean the world to me, and without their support I wouldn't be where I am today. My advice to young girls and women is to build confidence in yourself by forcing yourself to have uncomfortable and challenging experiences. If you aren't uncomfortable sometimes, you may not be growing as a scientist and a person.
