Profile Biography 
Maria Vlachopoulou has earned her Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering and her Master of Science in Operations Research from Purdue University in August 2010. She had previously received her Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Sheffield in the U.K. She is currently working at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a research engineer. Her interest lies in applying mathematical modeling and computer algorithms in the power and energy domain area and in particular in the field of the Smart Grid. Maria is the recipient of the IEEE New Faces of Engineering 2013 national award for her research in the smart grid and the contribution to community outreach. She is involved in activities that promote women in engineering and works with for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in promoting engineering for humanitarian purposes.
