Profile Biography 
Maria is a Colombian immigrant and multiple award-winning physician-scientist and inventor, who maintains a strong interest in the intersection of technology, medicine, and policy. Her experience in clinical business development and strategic partnerships is supported by her global work with PATH, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PAHO and recently spinning out products from the Bioengineering departments at UCBerkeley and UCSF.

Maria received her medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia’s leading medical school, which QS World University Rankings has placed number 1 since 2010. She practiced emergency medicine before starting a post-doctoral research fellow in genetics at Harvard Medical School, where her publications on her ground-breaking work earned her permanent U.S. residency for research contributions, along with numerous research awards. She then headed to the University of Chicago where she started an integrated program in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, that later dropped to joined two startups where she led the medical technology divisions.

Her areas of expertise are clinical leadership, medical technology design and development, global entrepreneurship, IP litigation, FDA compliance and medical education. She also holds a Master in Public Health from the University of Washington, and a Masters in Translational Medicine from UCBerkeley and UCSF.

In her spare time, she studies flamenco, creates figurative art pieces and sails. She is fluent in English and Spanish; and proficient in French and Portuguese. She lives in Silicon Valley with her husband and two fur babies.
