Profile Biography
I didn't really become interested in Biology until I had amazing professors in general education science classes as an undergraduate. I quickly changed to a Biology major and enjoyed many classes in fields such as microbiology, genetics, botany, and cellular biology. I decided to go to graduate school in a discipline that encompassed all of these: plant pathology. Here, I learned and researched how microorganisms caused diseases in plants and how plants responded to infections. Another part of my graduate work was with Kentucky Cooperative Extension Agency where I presented at numerous grower's workshops. This is where I realized that I love to teach and share scientific information to the community. After earning my Ph.D. I started teaching biology courses at Spalding University. Some of the courses I teach include Human Biology, Physiology, Genetics, and Cell Biology.
During the school year, I lead anatomy and physiology laboratory experiences for science courses at an all-girls area high school. I also mentor students with their science fair projects. My advice to students entering college is to enjoy all of your classes, even the ones that you "have to take." You may be surprised and be interested in disciplines that you have not even thought of before. I would have never thought when I entered college that I would one day be a biologist.
In addition to being an assistant professor, I am a wife and mother to two energetic boys. We are outside as much as possible and enjoy all that nature has to offer!
