Profile Biography
I don't know how I chose my career; I think I chose to follow something that intrigued me, and the career followed. I'll bet you'll find a lot of us who share the same story. For me, it has always been about curiosity, and then curiosity about biology, and then curiosity about fishes (I am a fish biologist). I like asking questions and finding the answer, and then I like sharing what I find with others -- that is what my "career" is now as a biology professor.

My path through education started in the pretty classic fashion -- high school, and then college, and then a Master's Degree. I then took a detour and worked for about seven years, but I missed the fish and went back for a Ph.D. working on coral reef fish... All of that landed me here, answering this profile and hoping that another young woman follows in my footsteps.

My advice for any young person, which young people probably hear all the time, is to find something that you enjoy. All the money in the world doesn't matter if you do not like what you are doing. I know I was fortunate to have two parents who valued education, and thought it was just fine for their daughter to pursue a career in science. I want to speak to the young women who perhaps do not have that person in their lives who encourages them to follow their curiosity wherever it takes them. I want to say to you that YOU can be the person who believes in you first if you need to be, because support is a contagious thing. Once you believe in yourself, you will find others who will believe in you too, and they will help you get to where you want to go.
