Profile Biography
I fell in love with astronomy when I was 10 years old and was absolutely thrilled to discover that I could get an actual paid job to think about the Universe! So I read all I could about it, talked to professional astronomers, pursued summer school and summer research opportunities, and lined up all the pieces I possibly could to make sure I had a shot at my dream career. It helped that I always liked to learn and loved Math. Astronomy is physics and math applied to the Universe, so it is important to have a strong foundation in these fields if you want to be a professional astronomer.

I enjoyed doing research but realized after a while that a lot of students were afraid of science and don't think it is fun. This made me rather sad, especially as I had traveled all the way from India to the United States leaving my family behind so I could study science here. So I switched from a research career to one in science education. I have had an amazing set of jobs and opportunities in the science education field - I have worked at the National Academies, NASA Headquarters, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, served as a Policy Fellow for the American Astronomical Society and now work at the Afterschool Alliance.

I love my job but I also have a lot of interests outside of work - I do pottery, and am an avid gardener, hiker, and rock climber. I also love to travel and have been all over the world and enjoy experiencing the beauty and diversity of our planet first hand. If you are thinking about whether a career in science might "fit" you - think of science as a wonderful tool to understand the world and universe around you. Don't worry about exactly what job you will get, but just start the journey and have fun learning. And if you then just follow your enthusiasm for the subject or issue that interests you most, you will find a job doing what you love. My career path is proof that life is dynamic and it's perfectly OK to adjust your career path as your interests change.
