Profile Biography
I have always had a double interest in mathematics and medicine. During my time at college this manifested itself in the form of a few major changes starting with Biology/Pre-Med, moving through a double declaration of nursing and mathematics, and ending with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics. After graduation, I immediately started a graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin in Computational Science, Engineering and Mathematics. Yes, it does sound like they are trying to put all the words they can in there! But really, the name is paying tribute to the fact that almost all of the "hard" problems out there are too difficult to be solved using only one area of knowledge! The interdisciplinary nature of my program focused on bringing together knowledge of an application (perhaps some sort of engineering), being able to describe the problem in the language of mathematics (yep! Word problems!!), and then getting the computer to solve it for you! The focus of my research was mathematical modeling of tumors. After graduating, I took a position with a group using mathematical models to study a particular form of brain cancer, glioblastoma. Our goal is to tune mathematical models of tumor growth to individual patient data so that we can then provide additional insight to the clinicians when they are planning therapies.

When I'm not working on my computer I love working in my garden, reading books (all kinds!), and learning how to cook new foods!

My advice to girls at all stages of their education is to really pay attention to the things that keep you interested! There seem to be far more non-traditional careers than traditional ones! So, trying to fit into a traditional career should never get in the way of creating your own path!
